“Excluding the individuals thrust into the military by the draft, there should be no "serve" verb when speaking of the military. For instance, in today's Army, most of them know that they are signing up for a job in which they may be shot at, killed, or wounded. They are paid a regular salary, they have health benefits, and they have some of the best job security around as long as they don't break any major laws. I have trouble "owing" those who "serve" when they're just doing their job.
